Status, Aug 14th: It’s quite typical. When working with one book, I get a lot of ideas for the next, and the next. In this case, Maya’s brother seemed to deserve his own story.

Excerpt:

“You’re one of those alpha guests from that other pack, aren’t you?” Emily asked the newcomer.

“Yes.”

“I thought so. I haven’t seen you around here before.” She looked up at him as he stepped. “Gosh, you’re big.”

He chuckled. “So are the alphas in your pack.”

“Yes. All alphas seem to grow another head as soon as they mature.”

He laughed heartily. “You have no idea how right you are.”

“I know I’m right. I’m studying shifter development. Doctor Logan has said I can be his assistant if I keep getting good grades.”

“Is that your dream?”

“Oh yes. I want to become a doctor just like Miriam and that new woman, Maya. If they can, I know I can too.”

“You’re an omega?” he seemed surprised.

“Isn’t it obvious? Tiny and geeky?”

He looked her over. “How old are you?”

“It’s impolite to ask a lady about her age. My mother always says that.”

“Your mother is right. But I’m still curious.”

“Well, I’m not telling. You’ll only start treating me like I’m a kid.”

“Or my younger sister.”

“How many sisters do you have?”

“Only one.”

“Lucky you. I have three sisters. All younger than me.”

“Sounds nice.”

“Trust me, it isn’t.”

“Is that why you’re here?”

“No, silly. I’m fishing. There’s a large pike just waiting to be caught.”

“I didn’t think those tasted well.”

“Good enough, I guess. But if I catch him, the other fish will become larger instead of being eaten.”

“Ah, makes sense. You’re harvesting the resources.”

“And wolves may need some fish in their diet even if it’s not their favourite.”

He laughed. “True.”

He sat down beside her and watched her fish while they chatted easily for a long while.

“Can I kiss you?” Kellam asked.

“What for?”

“I need to figure something out.”

She had never been kissed before. And this handsome stranger wanted to? Emily had difficulty resisting. What would it feel like? Was it like the world opened and you heard music in your ears? She felt curious.

“Okay.”

He smiled at her. A broad smile that made her feel giddy inside. Like he’d given her a gift that he didn’t share with anybody he met. He came closer.

She looked up, watching his lips and wondering if they would feel just as hard as he looked. Then she felt the slight brush of his skin against her. His lips against her mouth as he kissed her softly. Sweetly. She had thought he would be more eager. More hungry. That’s what a kiss was like in books. Demanding and giving at the same time.

She opened her lips to ask him. But at the same time, he tilted his head and kissed her harder. Using his tongue to dive inside her and make a groan deep inside his throat. The excitement inside her exploded into tingles. Making her freeze in shock as her entire body felt like it was igniting. She felt his arms wrap around her and her tightly to him.

He was everywhere. Inside her and around her. His scent bombarding her senses with alphas pheromones. She felt surprised. Shocked. And underneath it all, her wolf was starting to wake up. Urging her to lie down in front of him and give herself to him. No, she protested mutely. She couldn’t. She started to pull back. Using her hands to push against his chest. He wasn’t budging. He seemed to be lost in some sort of daze. She pulled her lips away from his and voiced her objections.

“Don’t,” she said.

That seemed to penetrate his daze, and he wrenched away from her. Backing away a few steps before he turned away from her and stood breathing hard as if he’d just run for a mile at full speed.

She pulled her jacket closer. Feeling the coldness from the air now that his body wasn’t warming her. Shielding her.

“Did you feel it?” he asked.

“Feel what?”

He turned around, but still he kept away from her. As if he didn’t trust himself if he came any closer.

“Did you feel the current?”

She shook her head. She hadn’t felt anything strange. But what could she compare it with? Every kiss felt the same, didn’t it?

“No. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Damn. You must be too young. Shit. You didn’t feel anything?”

She gave him a shrug and an apologetic look. Didn’t want to ruin his feelings by telling him the world hadn’t shaken even when he’d kissed her. Didn’t want to disappoint him. Had she been doing it wrong since she hadn’t felt the same as he did? She didn’t know. Again, she felt embarrassed about her lack of experience.

“Shit,” he said again, while he turned slightly away, breathing hard as if he had gained a blow from her words.

“It felt good,” she quickly said, hoping to make him feel better.

He laughed half-heartedly. “There’s no point in salvaging my ego, Emily. It’s just so unexpected.”

“What is?”

“You’ll figure it out. When it’s time.”

She stared at him. He was talking in riddles. Probably he regretted kissing her. Regretted kissing someone who didn’t know what she was supposed to do. Someone who didn’t want to go any further.

He came closer and put his right palm on her cheek, moving his fingers down her skin. She felt the hard skin on his fingertips, liking to know that he was a man who worked hard and wasn’t afraid to get his fingers dirty.

“Hold on to your innocence, Emily. Wait for me.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’ll return. When you are older. We can talk then.”

Then he gave her a brief kiss on her forehead before he left her.

She kept staring at his back until he’d disappeared behind the trees.

She shook her head. Had she been dreaming? Or had he been real?
